Why collars & leads fall short
The area around a dog’s throat is one of the most vulnerable yet is often an overlooked part of a dog’s anatomy. Pressure from a collar and lead can restrict blood flow and neural pathways and cause or exacerbate many physical conditions including:
- Eye problems caused by intraocular eye pressure
- Collapsed Trachea
- Syringomyelia
- Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome
- Sensitive throats (e.g. after Kennel cough)
- Thyroid disorder
A collar or lead can also inhibit recovery following surgery. Pain or discomfort in any form increases arousal levels and can have a direct impact on your dog’s emotional state and therefore, their behaviour.

Why harnesses are a better solution
Harnesses are widely recognised as a better alternative to collars because they avoid direct pressure on the throat and distribute force more evenly across the body. When designed well, a harness can support natural movement, improve comfort, and help dogs feel more secure and confident on walks.
However, as harnesses have grown in popularity, the market has become crowded with designs that prioritise simplicity or aesthetics over true fit and biomechanics. Some harness styles place straps across the front of the shoulders or legs, which can impede natural front leg movement. Others still sit high on the neck or shift under tension, reintroducing pressure to sensitive areas the harness is intended to protect.
Many harnesses are also built to a fixed shape, meaning dogs are often expected to adapt to the harness, not the other way around.
Why PerfectFit
Not all harnesses are created equal
Dogs come in an extraordinary range of shapes and proportions, and with the continued rise in mixed-breed dogs, that diversity is greater than ever. Each dog is uniquely built, often combining characteristics from multiple breeds. Yet most harnesses still follow a single pattern, designed around a standard shape. This can lead to restricted shoulder movement, rubbing, twisting, and uneven pressure, even when the harness appears to fit.
The PerfectFit Harness was developed to embrace a dog's individuality.
By breaking the harness into three fleece-lined interchangeable pieces, a Top, Front and Girth, PerfectFit allows each harness to be tailored to the individual dog. This modular design supports freedom of movement, distributes pressure more evenly, and provides a secure, balanced fit without compromising comfort.
In a market full of harnesses, PerfectFit stands apart because it adapts to the dog, not the other way around.
